The rareness and expensive price of inorganic fertilizers have become one of the factors that cause the problem in improving the rice production level in Indonesia. On the other hand, the continuous use of inorganic fertilizers could also caused serious damages to soil.
In animal husbandry, the problem faced is almost the same, low margin level gained by breeders as the effect of high production cost. In cattle breeding sector, ration or fodder allocation cost has the biggest portion in total production cost, which covers up to 60-70% of total cost. To reduce this fodder cost, alternative self-made fodder is needed, of course still with high nutrition, affordable price, and safe to consume by livestock.
One of organic material that can be used as organic fertilizer and alternative fodder is Azolla pinata. The optimization of Azolla pinata as green fertilizer and alternative fodder can be developed by creating an integrated organic agricultural methods between rice plant and duck which based on mutual symbiosis and positive environmental outcome.
This research conducted at Soil Laboratory, experiment field at Agricultural Politechnic Payakumbuh, and farmer field. The objectives of this research are to produce integrated organic agricultural methods of rice plant and duck by optimization of using Azolla pinnata as N fertilizer for rice plant and as protein support for duck. Furthermore, to know the benefit and the ratio of feed consumption and the effect of using Azolla pinna ta for the efficiency of feed cost. This continuing research will make an integrated organic agricultural methods of rice plant, azolla, and duck. TI1e research in the second year there are three phases of research; first, to determine the form of integrated cultivation technique of field paddy and duck. The second phase is see the soil condition after the method applied. The third phase is to find out the use of azolla for egging duck. In phase 1 year 2, Legowo 2: 1 rice planting system showed the best growth and production, for 6,81 t/ha. The number of duck only affect the tall of plant and relative growth of rice plant, and the production of duck in 3 and 4 week old. In phase 2 year 2, Rice planting system do not affect pH of soil and N factor in soil, P, K-dd, and C factor of organic soil, but the increasing number of duck improve pH of soil, N factor, and K-dd. In phase 3 year 2, this researches has no result, because up to the end of this research, the ducks has not yet produced any eggs, although they are already 7 months old. Integrated Organic agriculture system between rice plant, azolla, and duck can implied by giving organic manure for 10 ton/ha, given 10 days before rice planting with legowo 2:1 planting system which is interfered with 1.111 duck/ha (1 duckl9m2).
